PROJECT DESCRIPTION

SCOPE

Large scale foundations for Bascule Bridge, on Lake Lothing Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.

CHALLENGES

Working over water, managing people, 1220 dia – Bores up to 78 metres.

SOLUTION & RESULT

Using PHPA Polymer as a drilling fluid to stabilise the Bore.

Marine Piling foundations are an essential component in the construction of bridges, piers, and other structures that are built over bodies of water. These foundations are designed to support the structure and withstand the forces of the water, including waves, currents, and tides.

Deep Piling is a specialized technique that is used to create marine piling foundations that extend deep into the ground. This technique is particularly useful for structures that are built in areas with soft or unstable soil. By extending the piles deep into the ground, the structure is anchored securely and is less likely to shift or settle.

Rotary Bore is a method of installing marine piling foundations that involves drilling a hole into the ground and then inserting the pile into the hole. This method is particularly useful for creating foundations in hard or rocky soil. The rotary bore method is also faster and more efficient than other methods, which can save time and money on a construction project.

Piling under Polymer is a technique that involves using a polymer grout to fill the space around the pile. This technique helps to increase the load-bearing capacity of the pile and also helps to protect it from corrosion. It is a cost-effective and efficient method that can be used to improve the performance of marine piling foundations.

PHPA (Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide) is a chemical that is used to reduce the viscosity of drilling fluids. This chemical can be used to improve the performance of rotary bore method.

In bridge construction, marine piling foundations play a critical role in ensuring the stability and safety of the structure. By using advanced techniques such as deep piling, rotary bore, piling under polymer and PHPA, engineers can create foundations that are able to withstand the forces of the water and support the structure for years to come. Whether you are building a new bridge or upgrading an existing one, marine piling foundations are a crucial component that should not be overlooked.
